About Zoolu Organics

Zoolu's Story

How I dreamed up the idea behind Zoolu is pretty unique. Just over 2 years ago my partner was diagnosed with ALS, its a terminal illness. We decided to carry on with our lives and 10 months later we had our son Raine.

Since Alex's diagnosis I have done alot of research and I am convinced that ALS is a disease that is based around toxins in our environment. Since then I have eliminated all toxins in our house, from cleaning materials, what we cook with, to eating organic. When Raine was born I began looking at what companies put in clothes. I was alarmed to read that 90% of the prints on baby clothes use plastisol inks, which is PVC based.

This is how Zoolu was created. I wanted to produce something that was safe for my son to wear. A garment that was 100% certified organic cotton and screen printed using water based inks. I worked on designs that were original and not cutesy. As a graphic designer I was excited to put my son in a design that wasn't the typical baby cartoon designs. I also screen print all the shirts myself, I want to ensure the entire process is eco-friendly and that each product is unique.

About Zoolu

Zoolu proves that organic doesn't have to mean boring, and children's clothing don't have to be clichéd and cutesy. Zoolu is for everyone who wants to buy hip clothing with a conscience, for the beloved babies and kids in their lives.

Owner and designer Patty Abbott saw plenty of options when buying clothes for her newborn son. The problem was, she still couldn't find exactly what she was looking for: uniquely designed, ethically made, environmentally friendly, high-quality organic materials that would feel good against her baby's sensitive skin. A graphic designer who loves a good challenge, Patty decided to create the kind of clothing she'd be proud to dress her son in.

Her recipe for success? Modern, cool unisex design + organic materials + animal theme = Zoolu.

Animals have a lot to teach us about living in harmony with the earth, and protecting our loved ones. They also remind us that nature's beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and we need to tread carefully to keep this planet safe for all species. Organic cotton is better for the earth, better for the labourers who pick the cotton, and better for babies' skin.

Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals, while conventional cotton is one of the most chemically-dependent crops. We don't want those chemicals on our conscience, or on our babies' bodies.

By silkscreening the prints by hand with water-based dye, we're making sure our products are free of harmful PVC, while the colours are more vibrant. The prints will also survive countless washings - we're firm believers that fashionable and environmentally-friendly clothing can also be durable and practical.
